Armenia Presents Crossroads of Peace Project at Global Gateway Forum in Brussels

30 January, 2024

On January 29-30 Armen Simonyan, Armenian Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, participated in the "Global gateway" investment forum launched in Brussels. The event brought together deputy ministers from Central Asia, South Caucasus, representatives from Turkey and EU member states. Experts from the World Bank, European Bank of Reconstruction and Development and those representing private investment companies were also participating.

Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, opened up the forum, highlighting that deepening cooperation in the field of security, energy and infrastructure is essential on the way to building a better future.

Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures Armen Simonyan presented the project of “Crossroads of peace” at the panel discussion on South Caucasus and Turkey: the strong connectivity link between Central Asia and Europe, followed by a short video.

The deputy minister said: “The latest geopolitical developments proved that the diversification of transport routes is a vital necessity for the continuity of supplying goods to regional markets, and this is the major reason behind the “Crossroads of Peace'' initiative designed by the Government of Armenia. Armenia estimates the project to ensure 4,7 million tons of cargo and 300,000 passenger transportation through regional countries during the first year of operation. By 2050 the volume of goods transported through regional countries by Armenian railway infrastructures will reach 10 million tons”. Simonyan highlighted that the main principle of the initiative is that all the infrastructures, including roads, railways, airways, pipelines, cables and power lines, will operate under the sovereignty and jurisdiction of the countries through which they pass.

Within the framework of the forum Deputy Minister Armen Simonyan held bilateral meetings with his counterparts from the region as well as representatives of different international institutions and private companies.
